From VP News:
Venturing Crew 149 rode off for a spring hike on Sat., April 2, 2005. They left promptly at 6:00 am as planned with clearing skies and the temperature at 49 F. and climbing. Spirits were high. At Baldwin, Crew Advisor Don W. noted in passing that the temperature had inexplicably dropped from 49 to 42 F in the space of seven minutes. Once the turn was made in Franklin, NC, to head to Deep Gap, he again commented that the temperature seemed to have dropped from 41 to 33 F in six minutes. On the forest service road to Deep Gap a substance that the Crew has since dubbed "sneet", a peculiar combination of snow and sleet which resembled styrofoam popcorn pellets, began to fall. The two adults were seen pounding the dashboards of their vehicles and laughing in tandem. As the Crew hit the trail, undaunted, snow began to fall in earnest. It fell in the woods too, all around the Crew. It snowed, and snowed, and snowed until about 10:00 pm. The Crew enjoyed a fine trail lunch, had great fun pitching tents together in a snow pour, and settled in after a cold supper for a long winter's night. The snow continued but was apparently lonely so Mr. Howling Gale Force Wind was invited along for the party. Although the Crew enjoyed their stay, all were happy to eat breakfast on the trail in order to get back as soon as possible to their lonely vehicles. Much rejoicing was heard when the Old Clayton Inn and its buffet came into view. All arrived home safe and sound with plenty of stories to tell and the expectation of a Polar Bear Award in their future.
